이종만 작가는 자신의 삶속에서 자연을 온몸으로 느끼며 작업한다. 작가의 화조도를 감상해보면 꽃은 살아서 움직이고 새는 날갯짓 하며 날아와 앉아 놀고, 정지된 화면에서 순간성과 기운생동(氣韻生動)을 느낄 수 있다. 작가는 주변에서 자주 보았던 살아 있는 사물들의 작은 움직임조차 놓치지 않고 있다. 두터운 마티에르가 주는 깊이감과 휘날리는 속도감 있는 표현적인 붓질은 이종만 다운 회화성을 구축하였다. 재현에 근거를 두면서도, 재현을 탈피해가는 신선한 화면의 고유의 회화성이 반영되어 있다. 그는 보다 한국적인 것을 표현하고자 하였으며, 민화풍이 가미된 화조도 시리즈는 최근에 이르기까지 중요한 작업의 노선이 되었다. 가을해바라기1, 2 연작에서는 뜨거운 여름을 치열하게 이겨낸듯 세월의 무게감까지 묻어난다. 빠르고 힘찬 붓질에는 아름다운 생명의 향연이자 자연을 바라보는 신비함과 경건함이 생생하게 담겨있다. 작가의 예술에 대한 열정과 깊이를 함께 느껴보시는 좋은 시간이 되었으면 합니다.
Artist Lee Jong-man works by fully immersing himself in nature, experiencing it with his entire being. In his Flower-and-Bird Paintings (Hwajodo), the flowers seem to move with life, the birds flutter their wings, perch, and play—allowing the viewer to sense vitality and the energy of life (Giun Saengdong, 氣韻生動) even within a still image. The artist captures even the smallest motions of living things he encounters in his surroundings without missing a detail. The depth created by his thick matière and the expressive, sweeping brushstrokes that convey a sense of speed and dynamism establish a distinctive painterly style unique to Lee Jong-man. His works are grounded in representation, yet they move beyond it, reflecting a fresh and original pictorial language. Seeking to express what is inherently Korean, Lee has developed a Flower-and-Bird series imbued with the charm of minhwa (traditional Korean folk painting), which continues to be a central part of his artistic path. In his Autumn Sunflowers I and II series, one can feel the weight of time— as if the flowers have endured the fierce heat of summer with perseverance and strength. His swift, vigorous brushstrokes capture both the exuberant vitality of life and the sense of mystery and reverence toward nature.
