이성복 작가의 "C.P. Gradations"은 무비판적으로 사용되는 기존의 기호체계에 대한 물음과, 기호체계가 근본적으로 변화할 수 있는지에 대한 호기심에서 시작되었다. 작가는 기존의 기호체계를 다른 시각으로 바라볼 수 있도록 하기 위해 자신이 고안해 낸 새로운 십진수 숫자 기호체계인 'Gradation Number' 기호 표기법 디자인하였고, 작가의 표기법은 다른 기호들과는 다르게 0부터 9까지의 숫자 기호들이 형태의 유사성을 가지며, 눈금들의 일관된 변화 패턴을 통해 연속적인 단위 증가를 표기할 수 있도록 디자인을 천착해 내었다. 작가는 다소 투박하고 미숙하기도 한 숫자 표기법을 선보이면서, 새로운 기호체계가 한 개인에게 학습되는 일련의 과정을 있는 그대로 노출하고자 한다.
Lee Seongbok’s C.P. Gradations begins with questions about the uncritical use of existing sign systems and a curiosity as to whether such systems can fundamentally change. In order to offer a new perspective on conventional symbols, the artist devised his own decimal numeral system called the Gradation Number notation. Unlike traditional symbols, his system is designed so that the digits from 0 to 9 share formal similarities, with consistent gradational patterns of markings that visually denote incremental units. By presenting this somewhat rough and unrefined numeral notation, the artist seeks to lay bare the very process through which a new system of signs is learned and internalized by an individual.
