The World in Barcodes (바코드로 본 세계) 展은 2008년 뉴욕 Chelsea에 있는 White Box에서 발표된 바코드 작업을 재조명하는 전시이다. 설치작가 故 전수천 (1947~2018)은 베니스 비엔날레 특별상 수상(1995)과 미 대륙을 열차로 횡단한 프로젝트 ‘움직이는 드로잉’(2005) 시리즈로 유명하다. 바코드란 선과 숫자로 이루어져 상품과 사물의 가치를 인식하게 하는 매개체이다. 작가는 전 세계 188개의 만국기 이미지로 각국의 정보가 주는 한계를 넘어 바코드로 산정할 수 없는 진정한 가치가 무엇인지 생각하게 한다.
The World in Barcodes is an exhibition that sheds light on barcode operations, which were presented at the White Box in Chelsea, New York in 2008. The late installation artist Jeon Soo-cheon (1947-2018) is famous for winning the Venice Biennale Special Prize (1995) and for his project "Moving Drawings" (2005) series that traversed the American continent by train. A barcode is a medium that consists of lines and numbers that makes people recognize the value of goods and objects. With 186 images of national flags around the world, the artist makes us think about what real value cannot be calculated by a barcode, beyond the limits of each country's information.
