Tongin Gallery will display a special exhibition of Joseon's 繪 paintings in May 2025. Korean paintings have developed with unique ethnic characteristics in each era based on the aesthetic consciousness of Koreans. Especially during the Joseon Dynasty, when paintings in Korean art history were at their most developed heyday, they played an important role in the political ideology and practical ethics of Confucianism. While selectively accepting Chinese paintings that began to flow from the Goryeo Dynasty, they did not lose our own cultural colors, and rather developed it into a unique and independent style of painting. Joseon's paintings, which were developed mainly by the royal family, were led by kings and aristocrats, four generational writers, and professional painters such as 署 who belonged to the painting 儒, who led the way by developing paintings based on the thoughts of the 員 family and the Taoist family. The painters were part of the Dohwaseo and drew paintings for the country, such as maps for the government, paintings for the royal family's objects, ritual-related paintings such as Chansildo, and portraits of the royal family. On the other hand, the four generational painters left many paintings that focused on the historical content rather than the form or color around the genre of "civilization," such as Sansuhwa and Sagunja, which are the main examples. Along with this, Joseon's paintings, in which ordinary people's paintings such as genre paintings and folk paintings were developed together, are a valuable legacy at the center of the history of painting in Korea.
