TONG-IN 100th Anniversary 

The Store from TONG-IN (1924–2024), a multifaceted cultural and artistic space where antique art, contemporary art, and modern crafts coexist, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The period from 1900 to 1960 marked a crossroads between Korea's traditional art and Western modern art. Despite the upheavals of Japanese colonization, the Korean War, and the influx of Western culture, Korea's art scene produced many remarkable artists during this turbulent time. ▶ Tongin Gallery: A Seoul Future Heritage (1974–2024) For the past half-century, Tongin Gallery has showcased the evolution and trends of modern art through exhibitions held in collaboration with talented artists. A particularly notable moment in its history was Park Seo-Bo's first solo exhibition of Écriture in 1976, which became a turning point in Korean modern art and a landmark event in the development of Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting). Takashi Yamamoto, the head of Tokyo Gallery and a pioneer of minimalism, frequently visited Tongin Gallery starting in 1973. Tongin soon became a gathering place for Korea's leading Dansaekhwa artists, cementing its reputation as a central hub for this movement. ▶ TONG-IN 100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE To commemorate its centennial, Tongin Gallery presents the exhibition Tong-in: 100 Years of Solitude, offering a retrospective of its history and its collaboration with influential artists. Over the past 50 years, Tongin Gallery has quietly yet consistently curated invitational exhibitions, contributing to the establishment of Korean art's identity and the development of the national art scene. Particularly noteworthy was Tongin’s New York Gallery (2002–2008), which introduced 60 Korean contemporary ceramic artists to the global stage. The Tong-in: 100 Years of Solitude exhibition reflects Tongin Gallery’s unique perspective, presenting works that transcend the boundaries of contemporary painting with diverse styles and distinct aesthetics. Just as Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude explores love through the lens of solitude, this exhibition offers a heartfelt look at the solitary yet passionate path of creation within a challenging art environment.

통인가게는 현대 공예, 고미술, 현대 미술이 공존하는 복합문화예술 공간으로 1973년부터 판소리, 가야금 병창, 대금 산조, 옥류금 연주, 오페라 아리아 등 음악과 미술이 만나는 이른바 ‘조선 판소리 감상회’, ‘통인 오페라 나이트(Opera Night)’ 를 104회 공연을 개최하여 내국인과 각국 대사들이 초대된 문화의 장소였습니다. 영국의 윌리엄 모리스 공예 운동, 일본의 야나기 무네요시가 공예 운동을 하였다면, 한국에서는 통인가게가 공예 운동을 최초로 실현한 곳입니다. 1973년 국내 최초의 Craft shop은 공예 운동과 맞물려 전시가 SHOP 으로 연결되어 작가들 의 전시 작품이 늘 전시되어 있는 공간이 되어 현재까지 공예 작가들의 산실로 발전하였으며, 신진 작가 발굴에도 힘써왔습니다. 서울시 미래유산 통인화랑은 1975년 남농 展, 1976년 박서보 展을 통해 현대미술 전문 화랑으로 시작되었습니다. 통인화랑은 한국의 작가를 세계에 알리기 위해 2002년 통인 뉴욕화랑을 설립하였고, 전시를 통해 한국 도예 작가 60 명을 소개했으며, New York Christie's 에 우리나라 최초로 한국 현대 도자 작품들을 세계 경매 시장에 진출하여 주목을 받았습니다. 서울 통인화랑에서는 세계적인 작가들을 100여명 초대하여 각 대학 특강과 전시로 젊은 작가들에게 많은 영향을 주었습니다. 1974년부터 발행한 계간지 통인미술은 한국의 고미술과 현대 미술을 아울러 다루고 있습니다. 특히 국·영문 합본으로 발간되어 외국인들에게 한국 미술의 역사와 문화를 정확하고 간결하게 소개합니다. 통인미술은 1974년 창간호를 시작으로 1977년까지 발간되었다가 2007년부터 2024년까지 (72호) 발간되었습니다. 통인미술은 통인이 생각하고 실행한 일들을 담았으며, 초대 전시와 고미술 소개는 한국문화를 바르게 전달하고자 하였습니다. 가브리엘 가르시아 마르케스가 ‘백년의 고독’ 문학 작품 속에서 고독을 통해 사랑을 이야기 했듯이, 통인미술은 척박한 미술환경 속에서 고독한 문화에 대한 애정 어린 시선이 담긴 통인의 살아 있는 역사이자 정신입니다.
